New Zealand Mānuka honey has become famous, not only for its unique flavour profile but also its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Mānuka honey is superior to other honey in this respect due to the presence of methylglyoxal, the compound responsible for the non- peroxide antimicrobial activity (Alvarez-Suarez, Gasparrini, Forbes-Hernandez, Mazzoni, & Giampieri, 2014). Mānuka honey exerts a positive modulating effect on the gut microflora by enhancing the growth of beneficial guy bacterial whilst inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacterial. This in turn helps to prevent dysbiosis and therefore may reduce gut inflammation and permeability (Thursby & Juge, 2017).
