We export honey to over 15 markets around the world. We provide a reliable turn-key private label service to a range of global clients with differing requirements.

GRADING OUR MANUKA HONEY

The grading of Manuka honey has been a hotly contested topic over the last decade. Consumers have been exposed to multiple grading systems and in some cases downright food fraud.
Manuka Honey was traditionally graded on it’s non-peroxide activity “NPA” (as mentioned on the previous page).
The NZ government has disallowed any use of activity on honey labels and the two main rating systems now used by companies in the industry are UMF and MGO.

We will extend on these two ratings on the following page.
Other rating systems are misleading and leading agencies including the New Zealand Government are working to clean this up.

UMF VS MGO

UMF RATING MINIMUM MGO METHYLGLYOXL
UMF 20+ MGO 829
UMF 15+ MGO 550
UMF 10+ MGO 263
UMF 5+ MGO 83

UMF VS MGO

The UMF & MGO ratings are based on the level of methylglyoxal in the honey. Methylglyoxal is the primary chemical marker of antibacterial activity.

The MGO (or MG) rating is based solely on methylglyoxal. This rating is widely accepted and free for you to use on your brand.

The UMF rating is controlled by the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA).

The UMF rating / quality mark tests multiple chemical markers in addition to methylglyoxal to ensure authenticity. In order to use the UMF quality mark on your brand you must join the UMFHA. This is a NZ$40,000 one-off joining fee and annual membership fees of NZ$2,000. You are also charged volumetric fees on all UMF branded honey sold.
